about

I was three when my Dad died in a work accident.... an explosion at Dupont in North Bay, Ontario. This song is a true family story.

lyrics

Widow’s Waltz

He’d seen her around town. She used to smile at him
At the Orange Hall he asked her to dance
Her steps matched his time. Across the dance floor they traveled
They began the Lover’s Waltz

He used to say: “I never thought love could happen to me”
He used to say: “You are so beautiful.
My love, let’s go out dancing.
We’ll waltz our worries away.”

They danced in a spring meadow
They danced on the back porch
They danced through joy and sorrow
Now she dances the Widow’s Waltz

There were times when she’d pretend he’s out working
There were nights when sleep would not come at all
Other times she’d cuddle with their daughter
teaching her the Widow’s Waltz

They danced in a spring meadow
They danced on the back porch
They danced through joy and sorrow
Dancing the Widow’s Waltz

The town was shaken to the core
For he never left the factory floor
How could she know when he walked out the door
That she would never see him anymore

There are many other widows in her town
like Mrs. Merle Ralston and Mrs. Frank Brown
They have their luncheons, they quilt and go traveling
dancing the Widow’s Waltz

They dance at their children’s weddings,
square dances, line dances at the Legion Hall
They dance through joy and sorrow
Dancing the Widow’s Waltz
Dancing the Widow’s Waltz
